MX-5 Mk2 Initial Defect List

Mechanical Repairs

Here is a list of initial repairs I will need to undertake having given the car an initial look over.  These are basically all the faults that I knew the car had when i purchased it, and were obviously reflected in the price I paid for it.  Further repairs, restoration and upgrades will follow, but for now, the MOT is the priority for the moment.

Leaking Heater Matrix

The heater matrix is leaking coolant into the cabin foot wells.  For now I have bypassed the matrix by connecting the input and output heater hoses together using a small piece of metal tube, so for now, no heater.  The heater matrix pipes at the bulkhead are in terrible condition and need replacing.  I do not intend to remove thee dashboard to repair the heater matrix, i hope to be able to reach it from under the steering column, although i may have to use some custom piping or tubing as the original solid tubing may be impossible to replace with the dashboard in place.

ABS Fault

The ABS light seems to come and go, with no particular pattern.  This ABS fault needs to be fixed before its next MOT.  I will replace the front brake pads, and if the symptoms persist, will start checking out wheel speed sensors as most other parts of the ABS system tend to fail for good, at least this is my hope.

Major Service

Whilst it drives great, plenty of power etc, I do intend to give her an immediate major service, including coolant flush and replacement, engine oil and filter change with slick 50 friction reducer, air filter replacement and new plugs / leads.  The service kit includes a fuel filter i might tackle if it doesn't prove too difficult.  I will use various cleaners to service the air intake valve, degrease the engine  etc.

Front Brake Pads

An advisory item on its last MOT, the front brakes do feel a little weak and there is plenty of brake pedal travel, leading me to the conclusion that these have not been done yet.  I am hopeful that these could be causing a problem for the ABS, uneven braking perhaps?  While servicing the brakes I will service the wheel speed sensors and rotors for the front wheels, and do the same for the rear if time permits, while I inspect the rear brakes.

Interior Restoration

Carpets are wet and dirty, dashboard is dirty and everything id looking a bot tired.  In an overall very neglected condition.

Bodywork Restoration

Paintwork is faded to a dull pink.  Headlights are dull, mudguards have chipped paint, scratch to drivers door, and slightly misaligned rear bumper.
